The History of Corn:
Corn is believed to have been first domesticated by indigenous peoples in what is now modern-day Mexico around 10,000 years ago. These early farmers selectively bred wild grasses to develop the plant that we recognize as corn today.
Corn held significant cultural and spiritual importance for many indigenous civilizations in Mesoamerica, including the Maya, Aztec, and Olmec. It was not only a dietary staple but also featured prominently in religious rituals, art, and folklore.
Eventually, corn cultivation spread northward into North America, reaching the southwestern United States and the eastern woodlands. Native American tribes such as the Iroquois, Cherokee, and Sioux adopted corn agriculture into their own cultures. European explorers arrived in the Americas in the late 15th and early 16th centuries and learned about corn cultivation from the Native Americans. It was introduced to Europe by the early explorers and later spread to Africa, Asia, and beyond through trade networks and colonialism.
Today, corn is one of the most widely cultivated cereal crops in the world. It is grown on every continent except Antarctica and is used for a variety of purposes, including human consumption, animal feed, biofuels, and industrial products.
