“The older I get, the more often I find that frozen yogurt… fixes most things.”

The History of Frozen Yogurt:

Frozen yogurt has always been touted as a more health conscious option (lower sugar, fat and carb content).

Although regular yogurt can trace roots back more than 5,000 years to the Middle East and India, it began to evolve in the 20th century.

H.P. Hood introduced a frozen yogurt in the 1970’s known as “frogurt.” Its taste was similar to ice cream.

TCBY opened the 1st frozen yogurt shop in 1981. By 1984, there were more than 100 froyo chains nationwide. Frozen yogurt amounted to 25 million in sales by 1986.

By the 1990’s, frozen yogurt accounted for 10% of the entire frozen dessert market.

Popularity of frozen yogurt surged again in the 21st century with the opening of trendy Pinkberry frozen yogurt shops in 2005.

Today, frozen yogurt sales are over 2 billion in revenue per year.

How to make Chocolate Frozen Yogurt:

The complete, printable recipe is at the end of this post.

Add all ingredients (except chocolate chips) to a bowl and use an electric hand mixer to blend until smooth. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and chill for at least 8 hours (can chill overnight).

Freeze the mixture using an ice cream maker (following your machine’s instructions). It should take 30 to 35 minutes to come to a good, frozen yogurt consistency. Add the chocolate chips at the end of the churning time.

Enjoy soft frozen yogurt when eaten immediately, or transfer to a container to freeze and enjoy later.

I suggest giving it some freeze time, although that’s going to be difficult since the soft churned frozen yogurt is so amazing!

Top your chocolate frozen yogurt with whatever you wish. I suggest chopped almonds. But since this recipe for FroYo comes with chocolate chips already mixed in, you may not want to top it with anything at all. Enjoy!

Fun Facts About Frozen Yogurt:

  • When frozen yogurt was first invented, it was sold in scoops. In the 1980’s soft serve frozen yogurt emerged, and it has been sold that way ever since.
  • Dannon released “Danny,” a fruit flavored frozen yogurt pop in 1979. It was the first frozen perishable snack sold in the United States.
  • Active cultures in frozen yogurt are known to improve bad breath.
  • Sakura (a cherry blossom flavor) was first black frozen yogurt flavor ever. The black color came from a naturally activated charcoal.
  • Frozen yogurt is not always made from cow’s milk. Sometimes, sheep or goat milk, cashew milk, soy milk or fruit are used.
  • The month of June is National Frozen Yogurt Month.
