The History of the Cheeseburger:
Who invented the first cheeseburger? It’s really impossible to know for sure.
Food historians have their theories. The first is that 16 year old Lionel Sternberger was the originator of the cheeseburger in 1924. He was flipping burgers at his father’s Pasadena, CA sandwich shop, accidentally cooked a burger too long and threw a piece of cheese on top before delivering it to a customer. The customer was thrilled with the cheese addition, so they added it to the menu as The Aristocratic Burger (a cheese hamburger).
In 1928 Los Angeles, O’Dell’s sold a cheeseburger with added chili on their menu for 25 cents.
The first one to actually call it a “cheeseburger” was Kaelin’s restaurant in Louisville, KY in 1934.
Louis Ballast of Denver’s Humpty Dumpty Drive-in trademarked the name “cheeseburger” in 1935.
Regardless of the inventor, cheeseburgers are awfully popular nowadays. The original burger had added cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, mustard, ketchup and mayo. Now there are so many variations of cheeseburgers that it’s impossible to share them all!
